The Fairfax Civitan Club meets at 7pm on the first Thursday of
each month in Fairfax, Virginia. At these meetings we discuss ways to
help the developmentally disabled in Fairfax and surrounding communities,
and enjoy interesting program presentations. See our Events
page for additional service opportunities each month. These monthly meetings and service
opportunities give our members a chance to get better acquainted and develop strong relationships.
Our Club conducts numerous fundraising activities to help
us support programs for the developmentally disabled. We wrap books,
we sell hot dogs at community events, and we sell the popular White House Ornaments and Entertainment Books.
Our "hands-on" approach for the disabled includes numerous projects for residents at the
Northern Virginia Training Center, local nursing and retirement homes, community group homes, and clean-up at a local Fairfax City park.
Upcoming activities can be viewed on our Events page.
Report for November
Our Club dinner meeting on 6 November included “a fun and educational component” about Civitans, and we invited guests to join us at Red Lobster in Fairfax City. On 8 November, we cleaned our “adopt a spot” at the Wilcoxen Park. Also during the month, we continued our volunteer and other support for the new “Broadway Star” special club, mostly composed of developmentally challenged clients of MVLE in Springfield. Later in the month, our Fairfax Civitan Board held a dinner meeting at the Hartmann’s to check on our projects during the remainder of the year and to do some beginning planning for 2009.
Fund-raising is a special emphasis in the last couple of months in the calendar year. We sell White House ornaments (and other things too), and we work “for tips” wrapping presents at the Reston Barnes and Noble all day, every day from Thanksgiving to Christmas. All the money we net we give away, of course, mostly to organizations and activities that directly or indirectly support folks who are developmentally disabled.
In December, we host a party for the ladies in a group home. We also adopt a “home” at the Northern Virginia Training Center; Civitans provide presents for the residents; and Santa Claus comes to our party. In addition, our Club has a large potluck party for our members early in the month.
Happy Holidays.
